How to fix signup page error - "The customer cannot be authenticated"

If you receive a message on the plan signup page saying "The customer cannot be authenticated", this is typically due to the Credit Card processing security feature called 3D Secure (reference here).

This error occurs when the credit card you have entered into the signup page is not able to complete the 3D Secure processing for some reason.

To remediate this, please try an alternative credit card or alternative type of credit card instead.
