# TruGrid SecureRDP - Printers guide

This guide explains how printing works in a TruGrid SecureRDP session, how to get your local printer to appear inside the session, and what to check when it does not.
## How printing works in a TruGrid session

A TruGrid session is a Remote Desktop (RDP) session. Printing inside that session relies on **printer redirection**: the printers installed on the computer in front of you are made available inside the remote desktop, so you can print from a remote application to a printer sitting next to you.

Two things are worth understanding before you start:
* **Redirection is one way.** Your local printers can be used inside the remote session. Printers that live in the remote network cannot be used from applications running on your local computer.
* **You do not add a printer inside the remote session.** If you are working on a machine that already sits in the office network, the office printers are usually already installed on that machine and you simply select them. Redirection is only for the printers attached to or installed on *your own* computer.
Redirected printers are created when you sign in to the session and removed when your session ends. They are per session, not permanent.

## Requirements

* The printer must already be installed and working on your local computer.
* **Redirect Printers** must be enabled in your TruGrid settings.
* **Zero Trust Policy** must be turned off for your domain. Zero Trust blocks all device redirection, including printers. Only a TruGrid administrator can change this.
* RDP preference settings are available on TruGrid **BUSINESS** plans only. If you do not see the SETTINGS option, your account is on BASIC and settings cannot be changed.

## Step 1: Check the printer works locally

Print a test page from your own computer first. If it does not print locally, it will not print through TruGrid. Fix it locally, then continue.

## Step 2: Check your TruGrid settings

1. Open the TruGrid Desktop Connector (Windows or Mac).
2. Click the **person icon** in the top right, then click **SETTINGS**.
3. Open the **DEVICE REDIRECTION** tab.
4. Confirm **ENABLE ZERO TRUST POLICY** is off. If it is on, printer redirection is blocked. Contact your IT administrator.
5. Turn **Redirect Printers** on.
6. Click **SAVE**.

Settings can also be changed in the TruGrid web portal at [https://trugrid.net](https://trugrid.net) under **PROFILE > SETTINGS**. Settings saved in either place are respected by all TruGrid Connector applications.

Administrators saving these settings are offered a choice of applying them to their own account or to domains they manage.

## Step 3: Start a clean session

Settings are applied when the RDP session is built, so an existing session will not pick up the change.
1. Inside the remote desktop, **sign out** of Windows. Do not just close the window. Closing the window disconnects but leaves your session running, and a disconnected session keeps the printer mapping it had when it was created.
2. Launch the remote desktop again from the TruGrid Connector.
3. Your local printers should now be listed in the remote session.

| This is also the single most common fix. If you connect from more than one device, for example an office desktop and a home laptop, and you never sign out, you keep resuming the same session with the printers of whichever device created it.

## Step 4: Print

In the remote application, choose **File > Print** and select the redirected printer from the printer list. Redirected printers are normally shown with the local printer name plus a marker that identifies them as redirected.

If you want a specific printer selected automatically, set it as the default printer on your local computer before you connect, and disable **Let Windows manage my default printer** in local Windows print settings so it does not get changed for you.
## Troubleshooting

Work through these in order.
### 1. Sign out fully and reconnect
See Step 3. Disconnecting is not the same as signing out. This resolves most cases.

### 2. Check the printer is still the one you expect locally
Confirm the printer is installed, online, and set as default on your local computer. Print a local test page.

### 3. Re-check the Redirect Printers setting
Reopen the Connector settings and confirm **Redirect Printers** is still on and **ENABLE ZERO TRUST POLICY** is off. If a setting will not stay changed, or the tab is not available, your administrator has applied a domain policy. Contact them.

### 4. Remove and re-add the printer locally
On your local computer, remove the printer, reinstall it using the manufacturer's current driver, restart the computer, then reconnect to the remote session. A damaged or mismatched local driver is a common reason a printer redirects but produces no output, prints garbage, or appears and then vanishes.

### 5. Ask your administrator to check the remote side

Some conditions can only be fixed on the remote desktop or by policy. Ask your IT administrator to check:
* Whether **Zero Trust** is enabled for the domain. It blocks printer redirection for everyone in the domain and cannot be overridden by users.
* Whether Group Policy (GPO) on the remote computers restricts printer redirection. RDP redirection can be restricted by GPO independently of TruGrid settings.
* Whether a suitable printer driver is available on the remote computer, or whether Remote Desktop Easy Print should be used. Easy Print avoids installing matching drivers on the remote computer and is Microsoft's recommended method for redirected printing.

When you contact support or your administrator, include:
* The exact printer make and model.
* Whether the printer is missing entirely in the session, or present but not printing.
* Whether it works when you print to it locally.
* Which computer and operating system you connect from.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I print from a program on my own computer to a printer in the office?**
No. Redirection only makes your local printers available inside the remote session, not the other way around.

**My printer appears in the session but nothing comes out.**
That is usually a driver problem rather than a redirection problem. Work through troubleshooting steps 2, 4 and 5.

**Why did my printer disappear halfway through the day?**
Redirected printers exist for the life of the session. If the session was dropped and reconnected, or you reconnected from a different device without signing out, the mapping can change. Sign out completely and start a new session.

**Why can I not change the Redirect Printers setting?**
Either Zero Trust is enabled for your domain, or your account is on a TruGrid BASIC plan. Both require an administrator.
