TruGrid SecureRDP - Installing the TruGrid IGEL connector

Overview

The TruGrid Connector for IGEL is the TruGrid app for IGEL OS. It is delivered as an IGEL app package and rolled out to devices through IGEL UMS, the same way as any other IGEL OS app.

Two objects go to each device:

  • The TruGrid Connector app package. This is the Connector itself.
  • The TruGrid app signing certificate. IGEL OS runs only apps whose signature the device trusts. The certificate tells the device that apps signed by TruGrid are allowed to run.

Both are uploaded to UMS once and then assigned to the devices. After the device has received both and rebooted, the Connector is installed and users can sign in to TruGrid from it.

Before you start

  • The devices run IGEL OS 12 and are registered in IGEL UMS 12. The steps below use the UMS Web App.
  • Your UMS account has the App Management permission. It is set in the UMS Console under System > Administrator accounts.
  • You know which device or device directory the Connector should go to. Assigning to a directory covers every device in it.

Step 1: Download the Connector and the certificate

Download both files from TruGrid and keep them together. You upload them to UMS in Step 2.

  1. TruGrid Connector for IGEL (app package)
  2. TruGrid app signing Certificate.

The Connector and Certificate links can be obtained by contacting TruGrid Support.

Step 2: Upload the certificate and the Connector to UMS

Upload the certificate first. The device needs it to trust the Connector package, and having it in place before the app is assigned avoids a second reboot.

Upload the certificate

  1. In the UMS Web App, go to Configuration and select a folder under Files.
  2. Click Upload file and select the certificate you downloaded in Step 1.
  3. When the upload starts, set Classification to App signing certificate. UMS then places the file where IGEL OS looks for app signing certificates.
  4. Click Finish upload.

Import the Connector app

  1. In the UMS Web App, go to Apps and click Import App.
  2. Select the Connector package you downloaded in Step 1 and confirm.
  3. The app appears in the app list as TruGrid Connector, with the imported version shown under Versions.

Step 3: Assign both to the devices

  1. In the UMS Web App, go to Devices and select the device or device directory.
  2. Click Assign object.
  3. Under Assignable objects, select the certificate file and move it to the assigned side.
  4. Select the TruGrid Connector app, choose the version to install, and move it to the assigned side.
  5. Save, and apply the assignment on reboot.
  6. Reboot the device. UMS delivers the certificate and installs the Connector during the restart.

If you assign to a directory, every device in it receives both objects. Devices added to the directory later receive them too.

Step 4: Verify the installation

On the device, the TruGrid Connector is available after the reboot and users can sign in with their TruGrid credentials.

In UMS, go to Apps > TruGrid Connector > Versions. The row for the assigned version links to the list of devices it is installed on; the device should appear there.

If the Connector does not appear after the reboot, check that both the certificate and the app are listed under the device's Assigned Objects. The Connector writes its logs on the device to /userhome/.config/trugrid-connector; TruGrid Support may ask for them.

Updating the Connector

When TruGrid releases a new Connector version:

  1. Download the new package from the same link as in Step 1.
  2. In the UMS Web App, go to Apps and click Import App. The new version is added under TruGrid Connector > Versions.
  3. Assign the new version as in Step 3, selecting it in the version list, and apply on reboot.

To have devices pick up the new version without re-assigning each one, set it as the default: in Apps, select TruGrid Connector and click Set Default Version. Devices and directories that were assigned the app without a specific version follow the default.

The certificate does not change between Connector versions and does not need to be uploaded again.

Next steps

Users on the device sign in to TruGrid through the Connector with their usual credentials and MFA.

To let users on these IGEL devices sign in without the MFA prompt, list the devices in the TruGrid portal as trusted devices. See TruGrid Secure RDP - Trusted Devices.
